Le Roy Soleil;  Toudouze, Gustave and Maurice Leloir: Paris Combet & Cie, 1904 1st. Folio, 14.5in x 12in (373mm x 303mm) Text in French. 92pp., 40 magnificent chromotypogravure watercolours by Maurice Leloir, 34 full page and 2 double-page plates by Maurice Leloir, blue cloth covers with lovely gilt and polychrome front cover illustration of Sun King on horse. All edges gilt. Both the front cover illustration and the plates themselves in this first edition printing are much finer in both colour and detail than the cover and plates in later editions. Text presented in a decoration of style Louis XIV, each page hinged on parchment stubs. Book has small bumps and is rubbed through at cover corners and spine ends. Inner hinges weakening with endpapers cracked at joint, book still tight and firm, stubs not loosening. Pages lightly toning towards margins, superficial chips to some page edges, very minor tears where a few pages are mounted on the stubs - common with this type of binding. A very nice copy. Large book. Postage and insurance at cost.
