The Orchid-Grower's Manual, containing Descriptions of upwards of Nine Hundred and Thirty Species and Varietiesof Orchidaceous Plants; Together with their Times of Flowering and Most Approved Methods of Treatment, Practical Instructions…..: Williams, Benjamin Samuel: London, Victoria and Paradise Nurseries, 1877, Fifth Edition, Enlarged and Revised. Hardcover, green cloth decorated with gilt orchid and black design. 8in x 5.25in,336pp plus many pages of fascinating adverts for items such as fire engines, saddle boilers. 52 illustrations, many on folding plates, all present as indexed. Colour folding frontis of orchid (Odontoglossom vexillarium) with several tears at folds but nothing missing This work went through seven editions from 1852 to 1894, each giving the state of the art of orchid growing at the time and were all very influential and popular. This fifth edition added many species and descriptions that were introduced since the first edition of 1852, and many additional pages. Book Good, slight lean, bumps and rubs to cover extremities, outer hinges sound, inner hinges cracked along endpapers but firm. Tight, few small spots mainly on prelims, all plates intact. Old Garden Roses - Part Two The Gallicas ; Blunt, Wilfrid & James Russell : London, George Rainbird Ltd, 1957. Large hardcover, brown cloth. Elephant Folio. 17 x 12 inches, 47pp, 8 colour plates of Roses by Charles Raymond. This copy is damaged. All plates are present but 2 plates have been cut out, trimmed down in size and are loosely inserted. Presumably someone was intending to frame these as pictures but perhaps thought better of it. The remainder of the book is clean and tight. So this book needs a little restorative work or is suitable as a breaking copy for the plates.
