Complete in two vols. 11 x 7.5 inches, half leather, 39 tissue-protected photogravure plates (out of 40 indexed), the frontis plates are bound into the text block and not as indexed, there is an illustrated vignette half title page extra to index. Illustrators include Thorburn, Harrington-Bird, Caldwell, Napier Henry. Missing plate is “Rowing”, most plates are of birds and animals. Many in-text illustrations. x, 632; v, 655 pp. Books are solid and sound with board wear, rubs and scuffs to leathers, outer hinges cracked in places but boards holding firm. Internally light toning to pages, foxing to tissue guards. A massive work covering many aspects and including big-game, field game, animal descriptions, first aid, taxidermy etc as well as other sporting activities. The plates alone are very collectable. THE HABIT AND THE HORSE; A Treatise On Female Equitation. With illustrations, Lithographed By Messrs. Day & Son From photographs By Herbert Watkins; Clarke, Mrs. J. Stirling : Published by the authoress and sold by J Rogers, London, 1857. First Edition. Original blue blind-stamped cloth gilt, the title and a large vignette of a lady riding side-saddle on the upper board, all edges gilt. 12.75 x 10 inches (32 x 25.5 cm), pp. vi, (ii), 216, complete with 6 hand tinted lithographs by Day & Son and 3 lithographed black and white plates, all present as indexed. Small bumps and rubs to board corners and spine ends, small splits and rubs at spine tips, some darkening at board margins, hinges intact. Occasional spot to pages but generally clean and tidy. All platyes undamaged. Said to be the first book in which photography was used to help in the preparation of the lithographic plates. This edition, one of the more lavish books on riding for women,was followed by the second in 1860, published by Day & Son, and by a more modern reproduction in 1984 undertaken by The International Side-Saddle Organization in its effort to revive the beautiful and elegant art of side-saddle riding. Even the second edition is scarce, extremely rare in this first edition.

A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH TURF. Volumes I-III in Six Divisions; Cook, Theodore Andrea: London, Virtue and Company, 1901. The complete 3 volumes bound into 6 Divisions. Folios, 12.25 x 10 inches, green cloth with bevelled edges, decorated front and spine in black with gilt titles. Armorial bookplates inside each cover of Sir Hill Child Bart (?) with motto “Imitari Quam Invidere”. All edges gilt. Nice set, rubs at spine ends and board corners, all outer and inner hinges sound with no cracks. Running pagination, total 741pp, plus xxvii for index of illustrations in Vol I Div II, plus vii for index of illustrations in Vol II Div II, plus Appendices in Vol II Div I plus viii for index in Vol III Div II. Over 500 illustrations, each Division with six full size photogravure plates with tissue guards,  plus great many halftone illustrations, both full plate and in-text. Internally generally Very Good. The tissue guards have foxed, with some transferance to some of the plates mainly in margins. Small ink stain at top edge of last Division, barely noticeable on edge, but affecting top margin of several pages with small stain. Slight opening at gutters in several places, books remain tight with no loose pages or signatures. A comprehensive historical survey, with concentration on historical material in Great Britain from the late 17th century on, notable for the gravure plates and the wealth of other illustrations and information.

C.D. Radcliffe engraved by E. Landells, plus 27 chapter head and tail pieces engraved on wood. Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Rubs and minor bumps to board corners and spine ends. Gift inscription dated 1913 on ffep of both volumes, rear endpapers of vol II slightly marred with tear on free rear endpaper and margins of rear pastedown rubbed away. Book Good++, minor soiling to covers with few small marks, slight rubs and minor bumps to corners and spine ends, gift inscription dated 1932 on ffep, a few very minor foxing spots throughout much improvement than often found in this edition. Book very tight. 11.5 x 9 inches. Top edge trimmed others untrimmed, pp. xxiii, 240 plus 8 pages of publisher"s adverts. With 24 illustrations in colour and 52 in black and white by the author. Recounts the history of the Hunt from the earliest time to the present day [1951] and makes a fascinating story of hunting and social history. The author has collected fresh facts and tells of hunting people and local personages with a quiet humour. 10in x 7.75in, 221pp, b&w frontis, further 12 b&w photo, plus nice chapter-end drawings. Hard back binding in publisher's original finely grained scarlet cloth covers, gilt lettering to spine, gilt fox to upper panel, scarlet ink dyed top edge, endpaper maps. Book is tight and clean internally, has some staining to front and rear covers. Plates have the slight surface stress waves common in this edition, hardly visible in most cases but can be felt with finger-tips. Jacket has slight soiling, edge rubs and crinkles, small chips at spine head, corner rubs and small tears and small loss at rear lower corner, now in protective mylar sleeve and looking very presentable. Nice low cost copy of this classic work.
