The Illustrated London News Vol XII, January - June 1848: George C Leighton London, 1860. Large elephant folio . 16.25in x 11in. Book disbound, inner hinges broken and boards loos rom block, Title page and first page of  first dog-eared ant edges, last page in volume half detached with missing top corner. Binding a little shaken and gutters opening at places, but no loose pages. A few crayon marks on some pages, nothing too serious.   Profusely illustrated with the usual wonderful Illustrated London News engravings, maps, scenic views, ships, military, buildings, bridges, news events, fashion  and portraits of the time. Condition: spine backstrip  cracking and separating, hinges cracking. Front inner joint split and front board detached, front endpaper and title pages detached. It has been noticed that several pages are missing, 1 page from Feb 5, 2 from Mar 11, 1 from Apr 8, 2 from Apr 15, 1 from Apr 22, 2 from May 13, 2 from May 27, 1 from Jun 17, 1 from Jun 24. Many other engravings, ships, soldiers from different countries, buildings, fashions etc. etc. Extremely rare volume from the year of Revolution and Insurrection in Europe. Great historical records and of great interest. Very heavy, postage at cost.

The Illustrated London News Volume XXVIII, January to June, 1856. Volume disbound, text block intact, opening at enf signatures slightly, Damp stains to endpapers and at upper margins with blackening of paper due to this. Profusely illustrated with the usual wonderful Illustrated London News engravings, maps, scenic views and portraits of the time. Very Large multi-fold double sided engraving bound into front of volume, showing map of The Crimea and Adjacent Coasts on one side and  Allied Commanders in the Crimea on the other, small tears but no missing pieces. Plus many other reports and engravings of many subjects including troops, ships, war, politics ceremonies theatre etc etc.  The issues for the period of the Crimean War are particularly difficult to find, great historical records and of great interest, and especially this one covering the end of the war and peace activities.

The Illustrated London News Vol LIV, January - June 1869: George C Leighton,,London, 1869. Large elephant folio . 16in x 11.75in. Volume in Poor shape. Boards detached and breaking up with losses, volume is sold as disbound. Inner binding breaking up and some issues loose. First issue for January 2 1869 detached with severe damage to first 8 pages and gutter and edge damage to remainder of issue, pages 15/16 missing.. Subsequent 6 issues semi detached with loose pages. There are occasional strange missing leaves, single sheets, which is odd since the binding is with double folded pages in the signatures and one missing leaf should be matched with a missing leaf the other side of the signature, also there does not appear to be an article missing from the text. This may have been loose inserts which would be unusual, it may be printing errors. There are errors in the pagination elsewhere with page numbers out of place and even with sides of single leaves having non-consecutive numbers. It appears that the issue for Jan 9 missing pages 39/40. Issue for Jan 23 missing pages 91/92. Issue for Feb 6 missing pages 139/140. Issue for Feb 13 missing pages 163/164. Issue for Feb 20 missing pages 187/188. Issue for Feb 27 missing pages 211/212. Issue for March 13 missing pages 267/268. Issue for March 27 missing pages 315/316. The Illustrated London News, Vol LXIII, Jul-Dec 1873: George C Leighton London. Covers very tatty indeed with splits, tears, what is left is stained with damp marks, quarter of spine missing.  It has, however, by and large done its job and protected the book with only the fep, title page and first few pages showing damage to top inner edges. Likely caused by damp at some stage. The remainder of the magazines are in good shape with some damp staining to page edges and marking. Profusely illustrated with the usual wonderful Illustrated London News engravings, maps, scenic views and portraits of the time. Covers events such as the Ashantee war, the war on the Gold Coast with pictures of uniforms combatants, even a human sacrifice of a girl, the Civil war in Spain, Australian gold diggers, ship wrecks, life aboard troop ships etc etc. Many full and double page plates.
